Connect to Your VPS via SSH

SSH lets you connect to your VPS from a terminal. You can then run commands, install software and manage the server remotely.

Note: the SSH password is not sent by email. On the first connection, you can set your password directly from the terminal, as described in the setup process on your VPS. Keep it for future connections.

1. Find the VPS IP address

Open the VPS from your FreshPerf client area.

On the main page, make sure the server is Online, then copy its IPv4 address.

You can also find this under:

Networking -> Connection

The SSH command is displayed directly in this section.

2. Open a terminal

Windows

Use Windows Terminal or PowerShell.

Linux and macOS

Open the Terminal application.

3. Start the SSH connection

Run:

ssh root@IP_ADDRESS

Example:

ssh [email protected]

Replace IP_ADDRESS with the IPv4 address of your VPS.

4. Accept the first connection

On the first connection, SSH may display:

Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no/[fingerprint])?

Type:

yes

and press Enter.

Your computer then stores the server fingerprint in known_hosts.

5. Successful connection

Once connected, you should see a prompt similar to:

root@vps-distribution-number:~#

You can now manage the VPS.

Connect again later

Run the same command:

ssh root@IP_ADDRESS

Enter the password you previously configured unless you use SSH key authentication.

Troubleshooting

Connection timed out

Check:

  • the IP address.
  • that the VPS is Online.
  • firewall rules.
  • that the SSH port is allowed.

Permission denied

Check:

  • the username, usually root.
  • your password.
  • your SSH key if key authentication is used.
